Gear Pump Pulsation Dampeners

Even these, THE SMOOTHEST of all POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PUMPS have pressure disturbances, which are normally not important, but when they are connected to piping systems that were not designed, will cause pulsation.

Removing the ripple from gear pump piping:
1. How it starts
2. A partial fix
3. True solution - with elastomers
4. With PTFE or "FlexFlon"
5. No particulate
6. With dirt
7. Big but best

1. How it starts:
The final "meshing" of the gear tooth tries to compress some almost totally trapped liquid, to a very high pressure. The decompression escapes back through the gear tolerance gap, makes a pressure spike.
Meshing of Gear Teeth

2. A partial fix
High frequency pressure pulsation is dissipated by wide ratio of hole size through which it enters to diameter of chamber. FOR A PARTIAL FIX when stainless and an elastomer are compatible use PipeGuard HP. For use in externally corrosive environments. Small diameter bladder (gas bag) response characteristics are less suitable to low amplitude fluctuations.

3. True solution - with elastomers.
Larger diameter than PipeGuard. For use when elastomer and metal are compatible. For externally NON-corrosive environments, with elastomer bladder. Large diameter liquid bladder response characteristics suit low amplitude fluctuations removal.

4. With PTFE or "FlexFlon"
FlexOrber HP and FlexOrber LP from hydro formed dishings, with "Flexflon" or E.I. DuPont Teflon® have the largest chamber diameter to port hole ratio - combine best HF pulse interception with flow velocity smoothing. For use with liquids that require PTFE / "Flexflon". The Teflon® diaphragm stiff response characteristics will leave at least 0.1Bar / 1.5psi fluctuations in the system. "SoG" part Numbers denote lower pressure items from hydro-forged shells "FLo" part Numbers denote Medium to High pressure items form solid billet.

5. No particulate
WaveGuard HO uses Helmholtz Orifice Technology for greater efficiency for size. For high RPM, large number of gear teeth. No moving parts. Flow fluctuation ripple is removed only by the compressibility of the liquid volume. Pressure pulsation response from the pipe system is removed by orifice ration to vessel diameter.

6. With dirt
WaveGuard MT is for particulate laden systems and is larger. For high RPM, large number of gear teeth. No moving parts. Flow fluctuation ripple is removed only by the compressibility of the liquid volume. Pressure pulsation response from the pipe system is removed by orifice ration to vessel diameter.

7. Big but best
WaveGuard CER is for the ultimate acoustic performance. For high RPM, large number of gear teeth. No moving parts. Flow fluctuation ripple is removed only by the compressibility of the liquid volume. Pressure pulsation response from the pipe system is removed by orifice ration to vessel diameter. Where minuscule fluctuations in flow velocity are of little concern, and you simply need to prevent pressure pulsation & resonance.

Make a note of this pump's F number, also known as its Flow Fluctuation Figure. Use the F number with the % residual fluctuation required figure from the smoothness shown for each type of application. These two figures, the F figure and the % figure, applied to the size selection formula give you the smallest practicable dampener size.
"F" is a correction Factor on the square of number of displacers. Example, Centrifugal pumps are intrinsically good - have a high F, Sandwich diaphragm metering pumps have a low F.
F = 5

1. Pulsation dampeners listed are from 1000s of "off the shelf" inventory dampeners, for preventing piping systems from converting gear tooth flow ripple into pressure pulsation. Call toll free 1-888-DAMPERS (326-7377) for discounts, etc. Choose a dampener matching your pump connection size, for standard damping. Or allow us to calculate for you, from your smoothness required and your system data.
2. Where no OSHA requirement for in place flush before service, nor process need for 1st in 1st out, constant temperature, change of liquid pumped, interception of pressure pulsation; use second connection to save a "T" for RV. PI, or system drain. Two connection dampeners are standard lowest cost. WaveGuard and dampeners for 10 Hz. & above, i.e. systems 300 meters (1,000ft.) or less, must use FLOW-THROUGH.
